  1. Simply House Setup Information
  2.  
  3. We have tested Simply House on a variety of systems without any problems. However, in
  4. a few cases, problems were found with the installation or compatibility of certain
  5. manufacturer's video and printer drivers. In all cases, these problems can be resolved
  6. by installing a compatible driver.

  9. Installation error (GPF)
  10. ------------------------------------------
  11. We have encountered a few systems which have had a corrupted REG.DAT file. Such a
  12. file corruption will cause an error during the installation of Simply House. To
  13. remedy this problem, install Simply House again.

  16. Video For Windows error
  17. -----------------------
  18. We have encountered a problem with a few system's video card drivers. If you
  19. experience a GPF error while running Simply House, try changing your WIN.INI file, in
  20. your [drawdib] section, to include the following:

  32. ATI Ultra Graphics Adapter and other Graphics Cards
  33. ---------------------------------------------------
  34. You may encounter problems if you are not using the most current video driver for your
  35. video card. Some of the problems known to be caused by earlier versions of a video
  36. driver include:
  37.  
  38.     - Displaying TrueType fonts larger than 20 points incorrectly
  39.  
  40.     - Repainting the desktop bitmap incorrectly after closing a title
  41.  
  42.     - Banding problems in bitmaps when displayed in 1,024-by-768 mode
  43.

  45. Memory
  46. ------
  47. Simply House requires at least 4Mb of real memory and at least a 2Mb swap file. A
  48. larger swap file may improve the performance of Simply House.

  51. Incorrect printing occurs
  52. -------------------------
  53. During our printer testing, we encountered a problem with certain printer drivers. We
  54. solved this problem by installing the latest printer drivers available for a
  55. particular printer. To do this, contact your vendor or the printer manufacturer
  56. directly and request that they send you their latest Windows printer driver.

  59. Printers that use UNIDRV.DLL
  60. ----------------------------
  61. Some printers require the installation of a DLL named UNIDRV.DLL. Printers that use
  62. this DLL may encounter problems when printing topics from the text content. To work
  63. around this problem, choose Print Setup and clear the Color check box, if one appears
  64. (ordinarily, this box is checked during the default setup).

  67. Intel Smart Recorder owners
  68. ---------------------------
  69. Those users using the Intel Smart Recorder using the ir21.dll capture codec may
  70. encounter problems capturing video after installing Simply House. To solve this
  71. problem, simply copy the IR21.DLL from your installation disks back on to your
  72. Windows\System directory. Then modify your SYSTEM.INI file to read as follows:

  79. Simply House Quality Assurance

  81. The multimedia video-audio driver used by Simply House has been tested using the
  82. following configurations:

  86.           Simply House has been extensively tested on Windows 3.1 and
  87.           Windows 3.1.1.

  92.           Simply House requires video software drivers and hardware that fully support
  93.           Windows 3.1 standards.  The list below shows video systems that have been
  94.           tested and found to be compatible with the Director driver. Installing the
  95.           latest available video driver software is generally recommended.  Contact your
  96.           video card manufacturer for information.

  139.           Note 1: Driver version 1.53 sometimes hangs when playing certain Simply House
  140.                     transitions. Driver version 1.42 is recommended.
  141.           Note 2: Does not always properly display digital video in 16 bit (thousands)
  142.                     and 24 bit (millions) color modes.
  143.           Note 3: Does not draw extremely wide arcs properly.
  144.           Note 4: There is sometimes sound break-up or distortion during complex
  145.                     transitions using most sound cards.
  146.           Note 5: The cursor sometimes disappears when using a large virtual desktop.
  147.           Note 6: Video snow appears during some palette transitions.
  148.           Note 7: The version number of the video driver listed is recommended.

  153.           Simply House includes sound mixing and playback effects.  Pleasing sound
  154.           effects and sound start-up response time depends on the capabilities of the
  155.           card and the performance of the system.  The following sound cards have been
  156.           tested and are compatible with Simply House.

  177.           Note 1: IBM computers that have the M-Audio sound card should use driver
  178.                     version 1.3 or higher for best results. Older versions of this driver
  179.                     don't play some sounds in Director or AVI movies. The version 1.3
  180.                     driver does not pass the 16-bit sounds test for Director. Testing
  181.                     revealed that 8 bit sounds are corrupted when played after a 16-bit
  182.                     sound.
